Knowledge and Vocabulary in the Science of Reading

Outstanding Schools has invited Dr. Elfrieda “Freddy” Hiebert, a Savvas author and renowned scholar and researcher, prolific author, and CEO of TextProject to lead a webinar focused on improving knowledge and vocabulary in the science of reading.

This session is free to attend for all international schools, although it is especially targeted at those offering a US curriculum. It will be highly relevant for Principals, Heads of Curriculum, Heads of Teaching & Learning and Heads of Literacy/English concerned with improving student outcomes. In this webinar, Dr. Hiebert will provide research evidence, practical strategies, and teaching suggestions for how to prioritize and embed vocabulary learning into reading instruction and classrooms.

In the Simple View of Reading formula (Decoding x Language Comprehension = Reading Comprehension), we see the importance of both decoding and language comprehension, as they both play critical roles in building confidence and competence in reading comprehension.

Dr. Hiebert reminds teachers of the critical need to develop language knowledge and vocabulary, alongside decoding. Join us as Dr. Hiebert provides insight into the importance of language knowledge and vocabulary from the dimension of listening comprehension.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the deep connection between vocabulary, language knowledge and comprehension of texts.
  • Identify instructional strategies that make the connection explicit to young readers and support their development as wholly literate individuals.
